In 2007, to better fulfil its institutional goals and to increase scientific knowledge and research of Italian mammals, the Italian Mammal Society promoted a project regarding mammal collections in museums and both private and public institutions.
The aim of this project was to elaborate a complete overview of mammal collections present in Italy, in all types of management and use. An ad hoc group was created, composed of the Italian Mammal Society members Dr. Luigi Cagnolaro, Dr. Mara Cagnin and Dr. Anna Maria De Marinis, to better acquire the information needed and proceed to the development of a final document showcasing the results.
The project concluded in an article that was published in the Society’s journal, entitled “A survey of recent mammal collections in Italy” (Hystrix It. J. Mamm. 18(2) (2007): 137-156) freely downloadable here: www.italian-journal-of-mammalogy.it
This work includes:
– a bibliography that contains numerous mammal collection catalogues,
– an appendix with a database that summarises all the information gathered during the course of the project (solely downloadable from the website and not present in the journal)

We would like to take this chance to thank the directors and scientific and technical personnel that helped us in universities, local and regional museums as well as the private collection owners and all the other institutions that made this project possible.
In particular, we would like to thank Dr. Michele Lanzinger and Prof. Giacomo Giacobini of the Associazione Nazionale Musei Scientifici, Orti Botanici ed Acquari (ANMS) for their precious collaboration.
